Growing fruit has evolved quickly in recent years and so has the equipment.
The modern types of hail-proof systems include:
• ” A capannina”
• ”Flat netting” or “Press clips”
• ”Elasticated”
• ” Tramp ®”
Each of these types is suitable for different features depending on the system (the slope, plant spacing, type of variety, etc).
Choosing the right system depends on:
• The position of the ground (slope, wind, etc)
• The distances between plants
• The company work tools
• The size of full-grown plants.
Our experience in this sector means we can advise customers on the most suitable type of covers for their land.
1. A CAPANNINA
This is the oldest type but up until recently it was one of the most commonly used. The net is fixed at a steep tilted angle over a structure formed of either cables or tubes.
Advantages:
• Good hail run-off
Disadvantages:
• The structure obstructs any work that needs to be done under the cover
• Not suitable for sloped land
2. FLAT NETTING – PRESS CLIPS
This is the most commonly used type of system: the netting is joined in the middle of the row by plastic accessories known as press clips.
This means that the structure is almost flat and it is easier to pass by with processing equipment in the row.
Advantages:
• Flat structure – no cables or obstructions along the row
• Easier to open and close the system
• Very little maintenance
Disadvantages:
• Not always the best hail run-off, especially for side slopes
• Not suitable for sloped land
3. ELASTICATED
This type of system was invented in France, as a result it is very versatile and secure even on sloped land. The nets are fastened using elastic cords that come in 2 different set-ups: straight or criss-crossed.
Advantages:
• Can also be installed on rough terrain
• Versatility: can also be installed with rows of different widths
• Flat structure
Disadvantages:
• The elastic can deteriorate due to long exposure to bad weather
• Pockets of hail may form
